Chassis number check UAE — enter the VIN

Carlytics is a chassis number (VIN) check for used-car buyers in the UAE. Enter any 17-character chassis number to decode the make, model, engine, body and build origin for free. The full report — AED 39, one-time payment — adds factory equipment for many European cars, open safety recalls, a stolen-vehicle check, and accident, damage, salvage and mileage records where available.

Chassis number or VIN? In the UAE they are the same thing

Dealers, insurers and sellers in the Emirates say chassis number; the rest of the world says VIN. Both mean the 17-character code that identifies one car and no other.

The chassis number is fixed at the factory and does not change when the car is resprayed, re-badged, imported or re-registered. That makes it the one fact you can use to tie the car in front of you to its paperwork, its specification and its history in other countries.

Where to find it on a car in the UAE

  • On the vehicle registration card, in the chassis number field.
  • On a small plate at the base of the windscreen, usually on the driver's side, readable from outside.
  • On the label inside the driver's door pillar.
  • Stamped into the chassis frame or body — on body-on-frame SUVs usually on the frame rail.
  • On insurance documents, service invoices and import papers.

All of them must match character for character. A mismatch is the single most important warning sign in a used-car purchase, and no report can explain it away.

How to read a chassis number

A chassis number has three parts. You can read the first one yourself in seconds; the decode does the rest.

Characters 1–3 identify the manufacturer and the country of the plant. Characters 4–9 describe the model, body, engine and other build details in the manufacturer's own code, with a check digit in position 9. Characters 10–17 carry the model year information, the assembly plant and the car's serial number.

The very first character already tells you where the car was built, which is the quickest way to spot an import in a showroom:

First characterBuilt inTypical makes
JJapanToyota, Lexus, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Infiniti built in Japan
KSouth KoreaHyundai, Kia, Genesis built in Korea
LChinaBYD, Geely, Chery, Haval, GAC, MG and Chinese-built global brands
WGermanyMercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen
SUnited KingdomLand Rover, Range Rover, Bentley, Jaguar

1, 4, 5United StatesUS-built Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, GM, Ford, BMW X models
2 / 3Canada / MexicoNorth American plants of global brands
MIndia, Thailand, IndonesiaSmall cars and pickups from Asian plants

A car's build origin does not tell you where it was first sold — a Japanese-built SUV may have spent its first years in North America — but it tells you which reference data describes the car, and whether the story you are being told fits.

What the AED report covers

One chassis number, one flat price of AED 39. No subscription, no upsell tiers — the full report is ready in about a minute.

Full chassis-number decode

Make, model, body style, engine, transmission, drive, model year information and the plant and country where the car was built.

Factory equipment and build data

For many European cars — BMW, Audi and the wider Volkswagen group including Bentley, and Land Rover — the factory options and build details the car left the line with, where available.

Open safety recalls

Recall campaigns recorded for the model, so you can ask the seller or dealer to confirm the work was done.

Stolen-vehicle check

The chassis number checked against public stolen-vehicle databases.

Accident and damage records

Accident and damage records linked to the chassis number, where available.

Salvage, flood and auction history

For cars imported from the United States: salvage, flood and auction records for the chassis number, where available.

Mileage records and rollback check

Dated odometer readings checked for signs of rollback, where available.

European history for European imports

If the car spent part of its life in Europe: dated registration and inspection records, where available.

European luxury imports: Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Range Rover, Bentley

A large share of the cars UAE buyers check with us are European-built luxury and performance cars. For these, the chassis number answers the questions that decide the price.

Confirm the exact model and engine

A Cayenne, an S-Class or an X5 is sold in many versions that look almost identical from the kerb. The decode confirms the model, engine and body the car was built with, so a lower version wearing a top-version badge is caught before you pay top-version money.

See the factory equipment

For BMW, Audi and the wider Volkswagen group including Bentley, and Land Rover, the report lists the factory options the car was built with, where available — the packages, wheels, interior and driver assistance that make up most of a luxury car's value. Compare it with the advert line by line.

Look back at the car's European life

Many European cars in the UAE were first registered in Europe. Where the car has a European past, the report adds dated registration, inspection and mileage records where available — a useful cross-check on the odometer and on when the car really left Europe.

Chinese brands: BYD, Geely, Chery, Jetour, GAC, Haval, MG

Chinese brands have grown quickly in the UAE, and many buyers are now checking a brand they have never owned before.

Chinese-built cars carry a standard 17-character chassis number beginning with L. The decode confirms the manufacturer, model, body and powertrain — including whether a car is a full electric, a plug-in hybrid or petrol — which matters when two versions of the same model share a name and a body.

New brands also mean new recall campaigns. The full report lists open safety recalls recorded for the model so you can ask the dealer to confirm the work, and runs the chassis number against public stolen-vehicle databases like any other car.

How to check a chassis number before you buy

Five steps, in this order. The first three take less time than the test drive.

  1. 1

Get the full 17-character chassis number

Ask the seller for it before you travel to see the car, or photograph the windscreen plate. A seller who will not share it is telling you something.

  2. 2

    Decode it for free

Enter it at the top of this page and compare the make, model, engine and build origin with the advert.

  3. 3

    Match it on the car

Check that the registration card, windscreen plate, door-pillar label and frame stamping all show exactly the same number.

  4. 4

    Unlock the full report

For AED 39, see factory equipment where available, open recalls, the stolen check and the accident, damage, salvage and mileage records held for the chassis number.

  5. 5

    Inspect before you pay

Use what the report shows to direct an independent pre-purchase inspection: bodywork, underbody, engine and electronics.

What we check for when preparing a report

Carlytics is the largest online database of used vehicle records. It contains more than a billion data points from all over the world.

Damage

Damage

The report includes accident and damage records where available for the VIN. No record found is not proof the car was never damaged. Damage can lower the car's value and cause safety problems. Our report helps you avoid cars with hidden damage that sellers might not tell you about.

Mileage rollbacks

Mileage rollbacks

We look for signs that the mileage might have been changed. Some sellers lower the mileage to make the car look newer. We check mileage records from different databases to make sure the numbers are honest.

Specs & equipment

Specs & equipment

We list the car's original features and equipment. This helps you see if anything is missing or changed. You'll know exactly what the car should have when it left the factory.

Safety

Safety

Manufacturers typically issue safety recalls to fix harmful defects. Make sure your car doesn't have any before taking it on the road and also learn its general safety rating.

Natural disaster

Natural disaster

Check if the vehicle has been damaged in floods, hurricanes, or other natural disasters.

Stolen car database

Stolen car database

We check police and insurance records to see if the car has been reported stolen. Buying a stolen car can lead to big legal and financial problems. Our report gives you peace of mind.

Photos

Photos

If available, we include old photos or auction pictures of the car. These photos can show past damage, repairs, or changes that you might not notice in person.

Market value

Market value

We compare prices from many sources to show the car's fair market value. This helps you know if the price is good or too high, so you can make a smart deal.

Why Run a VIN Check Before Buying a Used Car?

A 2018 European Parliament resolution puts tampered mileage at an estimated 30-50% of cross-border used-car sales. Carlytics catches odometer rollbacks, undisclosed accident damage, stolen-vehicle flags, and open safety recalls by scanning 900M+ records across 47+ countries -- all from a single 17-character VIN, starting free.

Don't risk thousands on a used car with hidden problems. A free VIN check takes seconds and can save you from costly surprises.

Detect Odometer Fraud

According to a 2018 European Parliament resolution, an estimated 5–12% of domestic and 30–50% of cross-border used-car sales involve tampered mileage. A VIN history check reveals odometer rollback and mileage discrepancies that sellers try to hide.

Uncover Hidden Accident Damage

Structural damage from past accidents may not be visible during a physical inspection. A vehicle history report shows collision records the seller may not disclose.

Verify Stolen Vehicle Status

Over 600,000 vehicles are stolen in the EU each year, many resold across borders. Our stolen car database check confirms the vehicle is legally clear before you buy.

Check Cross-Border Import History

Vehicles imported from abroad may have different specs, undisclosed damage, or missing service records. Trace the full registration and import history with a VIN check.
