VIN check for used cars - enter your vehicle identification number

Carlytics is a VIN check and vehicle history platform that cross-references 900+ million vehicle records across 47+ countries. In Cyprus, 67.9% of the passenger cars registered from January to July 2026 were imported used, often from the UK or Japan, so most of a car's history sits in the country it came from. Each check reads the 17-character VIN for mileage, accident and damage records where available, theft and recalls. Full reports from EUR 8.90, one payment, no subscription.

What we check before you buy in Cyprus

One VIN, the records from the countries the car has lived in. These are the checks that matter most for a car that came to Cyprus from the UK, Japan or mainland Europe.

Damage

Damage

The report includes accident and damage records where available for the VIN, such as salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications. A car repaired abroad and shipped to Cyprus can look clean on the forecourt; the record from its first life is where the repair shows. No record found is not proof the car was never damaged.

Mileage rollbacks

Mileage rollbacks

We put the dated mileage records we hold for the VIN in order, where available, so you can compare them with the dashboard. The weak point on an import is the gap between the last reading abroad and the first reading in Cyprus.

Specs & equipment

Specs & equipment

We decode the factory specification from the VIN: model, engine, fuel, gearbox, body and plant. Check it against the advert and the Cypriot registration certificate before you agree a price.

Safety recalls

Safety recalls

We list safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year. A used car imported into Cyprus can reach its new owner without any recall letter, so ask a dealer of the brand to confirm the work was done.

Flood and weather damage

Flood and weather damage

Check whether the car carries flood or weather damage records where available. Flood cars are written off in one country and resold in another, which is exactly the route an import takes.

Stolen car check

Stolen car check

We check the VIN against European police and theft lists. A car stolen in another country and re-registered in Cyprus can be taken back from the buyer.

Photos

Photos

Where available, we include earlier photos of the car, for example from auctions. They can show damage, repairs or a different colour that the seller has not mentioned.

Market value

Market value

We estimate a fair market value from comparable cars, so you can tell whether the asking price in euros is reasonable for the year, mileage and specification.

Why check a VIN before buying a used car in Cyprus?

Two in three cars registered in Cyprus this year were first registered somewhere else. A 2018 European Parliament resolution puts tampered mileage at an estimated 30-50% of cross-border used-car sales. The VIN is the one identifier that follows the car across borders, so it is where a check starts.

Mileage on imports

The odometer can be wound back in the gap between the last reading abroad and registration in Cyprus. Dated mileage records, where available, show whether the dashboard fits the car's past.

Hidden accident damage

A repaired write-off can be shipped to Cyprus and sold as accident-free. Accident and damage records, where available, show what happened before it arrived.

Stolen vehicles

Cars stolen elsewhere in Europe are moved across borders and re-registered. A theft check against European police lists protects you from losing the car and the money.

Import paperwork

Since Brexit, a used car from the UK must be no more than five years old on arrival to be registered in Cyprus. The decoded year and specification help you test what the import papers say.

Why a used car in Cyprus is an import question

In Cyprus, the history of a used car usually starts somewhere else. That changes what you need to check and where the risk sits.

In the first seven months of 2026, 18,227 of the 26,841 passenger cars registered in Cyprus were used: 67.9%, up from 60% a year earlier. Cyprus builds no cars, so a used registration is a car that already had a life somewhere else. For 2025 as a whole, used cars were 64.1% of registrations.

Cyprus drives on the left, like the UK, so right-hand-drive cars from the UK and Japan are the natural supply. Those cars arrive with a past recorded in another country, often in another language, and the Cypriot registration starts a fresh record on the day the car is registered with the Road Transport Department.

Since Brexit, UK cars are third-country imports

A used passenger car from the UK can be registered in Cyprus only if it is no more than five years old on the day it arrives at a Cypriot port, counted from its first registration as new. The seller should be able to show the original UK V5C registration certificate and a valid Cypriot MOT.

Customs charges VAT at 19% on the customs value plus any duty. Duty on a passenger car is 0% when its UK origin is proven under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, and 10% otherwise.

What this means for you: the first-registration date and the mileage at export matter. Compare them with the decoded model year and the dated mileage records in the report. Our UK import guide goes step by step.

VIN or Japanese frame number?

Cars built for the UK, mainland Europe or the US carry a 17-character VIN. On a Cypriot car you find it on the registration certificate (field E), at the bottom of the windscreen and on the door pillar. That is the number a Carlytics report is built on.

Cars built for the Japanese home market often carry a shorter frame number instead. For those cars, the export certificate and the auction sheet held by the importer are the documents to read. Our Japanese import guide explains how.

Recalls on privately imported cars

In December 2025 the association of authorised car importers in Cyprus (SEMIO) said that buyers of used cars imported from third countries do not receive official recall information from the “grey” importers who brought them in. The report lists recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year, so you know what to ask a dealer of the brand to check.

What the report shows for a car sold in Cyprus

Here is what to expect from a EUR 8.90 report on a car with a 17-character VIN.

In the report

  • A factory decode: make, model, model year, engine, fuel, gearbox, body style and plant.
  • Dated mileage records where available for the VIN, including records from the UK and mainland Europe.
  • Accident and damage records where available for the VIN, for example salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications.
  • A stolen-vehicle check against European police and theft lists.
  • Safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year.
  • Market value, known model issues and running-cost context.

Before you check

  • Have the 17-character VIN ready. It is in field E of the Cypriot registration certificate; a number plate alone is not enough.
  • For a recent import, ask for the UK V5C or the Japanese export certificate as well.
  • Book an independent inspection before you pay a deposit, and keep the report with the car's documents.

No record found is not proof that a car is undamaged or that its mileage is correct.

Checking a used car in Cyprus, in order

Five steps, cheapest first. Any one of them can end the deal before you spend money on the next.

  1. 1

Get the VIN and the papers

Ask for a photo of the VIN on the car and of the Cypriot registration certificate. For a recent import, also ask for the UK V5C or the Japanese export certificate.

  2. 2

    Run the free preview

Enter the VIN above. If the make, model or year do not match the advert, ask why before you travel.

  3. 3

    Read the full report

Put the dated mileage records in order and compare them with the dashboard. Note any accident, damage, theft or recall entries.

  4. 4

Ask the seller about every gap

A long gap between the last reading abroad and the first in Cyprus needs an explanation and documents.

  5. 5

Inspect and put it in writing

Book an independent inspection and write the seller's mileage and accident statements into the sale agreement.

Free checks worth doing in Cyprus, and what they show

Some useful checks cost nothing. Each covers one part of the car's story; do them alongside the report.

What the free checks leave out

Each free check covers one source. None of them puts a car's dated history from the UK, mainland Europe or the US next to its Cypriot paperwork. That is the part the report adds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a VIN in Cyprus?
Enter the 17-character VIN in the box above. The free preview confirms the make, model and year. The full report (EUR 8.90) adds mileage, accident and damage records where available, a theft check, recalls, the factory specification and market value.
Where do I find the VIN on a Cypriot car?
On the registration certificate (field E), at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver's side and on the door pillar. Check that all three match before you pay a deposit.
What is the difference between a VIN and a chassis number?
On cars built for the UK, Europe and the US they are the same 17-character code; in Cyprus most people say chassis number. Cars built for the Japanese home market often carry a shorter frame number instead, which is not a VIN. Our reports need the full 17-character VIN.
Can I check a car by its Cypriot number plate?
Our reports are built on the VIN, because the VIN stays with the car when its plates change. Find the VIN on the registration certificate, then check it here.
Can Carlytics check a car imported from the UK?
Yes. A UK car carries a 17-character VIN, and the report includes dated mileage records from the UK and Europe where available, plus accident and damage records where available, a theft check and recalls. For the UK MOT history, look up the old UK plate on MOT Checkup (motcheckup.co.uk).
Can Carlytics check a Japanese import?
Yes, when the car carries a full 17-character VIN. If its papers show only a shorter Japanese frame number, ask the importer for the export certificate and the auction sheet; our Japanese import guide explains what to look for.
Does the report include accident and damage data?
Yes. Reports include accident and damage records, for example salvage and write-off titles, auction damage classifications and national registry damage markers, where available for the VIN. Coverage varies by car and country, and no record found is not proof that a car is undamaged.
How do I spot a clocked import?
Compare the dashboard with the dated mileage records in the report and with the mileage on the export documents. A drop between readings, or a long gap with no reading at all before the car reached Cyprus, needs an explanation from the seller.
Why do recalls matter on an imported car?
A privately imported car often reaches its new owner without recall letters. The report lists recall campaigns for the make, model and year, so you can ask a dealer of the brand to check the work was done.
Does the report check whether the car is stolen?
Yes. The VIN is checked against European police and theft lists. A stolen car can be taken back from the buyer even after it was registered in Cyprus.
How much does a report cost?
EUR 8.90 + VAT for one full report, a single payment with no subscription. Other VIN-history services advertised in Cyprus listed €25 and €50 per check when we looked on 18 October 2026, and carVertical lists €27.99 for one report (VAT may apply, checked 30 September 2026).
Which countries' records does Carlytics cover?
Carlytics covers vehicles across 47+ countries with data from 1,200+ databases, including the UK, mainland Europe and the US. The VIN decoder works for any car with a 17-character VIN.

Our rankings and head-to-head comparisons against the major European VIN check services.

Worked example: a UK import with a mileage gap

For a car imported from the UK, read the Cypriot paperwork next to the UK record. Since Brexit the car must be no more than five years old on arrival, and the seller should hold the original V5C. Compare the mileage on each document in date order.

Illustrative case with invented paperwork, not an actual vehicle or a Carlytics data result:

Evidence suppliedWhat the buyer sees
Advert in Limassol2021 hatchback, “one owner, 48,000 km”, imported from the UK.
Last UK MOT, by old platePassed with 71,000 km recorded, eleven months before export.
Cypriot MOT certificate48,000 km recorded at registration in Cyprus.

Which reading needs an explanation?

The odometer is 23,000 km lower in Cyprus than at the last UK test. A replaced instrument cluster can explain a difference only with an invoice and a recorded reading. Without them, treat the mileage as unverified, ask the seller in writing and price the car on the higher figure.

Before you pay a deposit

  1. Match the VIN on the car, the Cypriot registration certificate and the V5C, and note the first-registration date.
  2. Look up the UK MOT history by the old plate and write each reading down with its date.
  3. Take the readings, the report and the seller's explanation to an independent inspection.
