VIN check for used cars - enter your vehicle identification number

The Carlytics VIN decoder reads the 17-character VIN that identifies cars built for the UK, Europe, the US and most export markets. In Cyprus, where two in three newly registered cars arrive used from abroad, decoding the VIN is the quickest way to confirm that the car in the advert is the car on the registration certificate. Decoding is free; full history reports cost EUR 8.90.

What the 17 characters mean

A VIN has three parts. Each one answers a different question about the car.

Characters 1 to 3: who built it

The world manufacturer identifier. J means Japan, S the UK, W Germany, V France or Spain, Z Italy, K South Korea, and 1 to 5 North America. A UK-built Toyota starts with S; one built in Japan starts with J.

Characters 4 to 9: what it is

The vehicle descriptor: model, body, engine and safety equipment, written by the manufacturer. On many cars the ninth character is a check digit.

Characters 10 to 17: which one

The vehicle identifier: model year (character 10 on many makes), plant and serial number. European makers do not always use character 10 for the year, so a decoder that guesses it can be wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the VIN decoder free?
Yes. Decoding the make, model, year and specification is free. The full report (EUR 8.90) adds mileage, accident and damage records where available, theft, recalls and market value.
Can I decode a Japanese frame number?
The decoder needs a full 17-character VIN. A Japanese home-market frame number is a different, shorter format, so ask the importer for the export certificate, which states the model code and grade.
Why does my VIN not decode?
Check for the letters I, O and Q, which never appear in a VIN, and for a missing or extra character. Copy it from the registration certificate (field E) rather than from an advert.
Does the VIN show the model year?
On many makes character 10 is the model year. European makers do not always follow that, so the report shows the model year, production year and first registration as separate fields where we have them.
Where is the VIN on a Cypriot registration certificate?
In field E. It should match the plate at the bottom of the windscreen and the one on the door pillar.
Is it safe to give a seller's VIN to a decoder?
Yes. The VIN is printed on the windscreen and on public documents. It does not reveal the owner's identity.
Does a decode tell me if the car is stolen or clocked?
A decode describes the car as it was built. The theft check and the dated mileage records are in the full report.
How much is the full report?
EUR 8.90 + VAT, a single payment with no subscription.
