VIN check for used cars - enter your vehicle identification number

In Cyprus the VIN is usually called the chassis number. On cars built for the UK, Europe and the US it is a 17-character code on the registration certificate (field E), the windscreen and the door pillar. Carlytics decodes it for free and builds a full vehicle history report from 900+ million records across 47+ countries for EUR 8.90.

How to check a chassis number in Cyprus

Start with the number on the car and on its papers, then check it online before you travel or pay a deposit.

Where to find it

On the Cypriot registration certificate in field E; at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side; on the plate in the door pillar; and often stamped on the bulkhead in the engine bay. All of them should show the same characters.

17 characters or a Japanese frame number?

A 17-character code with no I, O or Q is a VIN and can be checked here. A shorter code with a dash is usually a Japanese home-market frame number; our reports need the full 17-character VIN, so for those cars read the export certificate and auction sheet from the importer. Our Japanese import guide explains how.

Three warning signs

  • The number in the advert differs from the one on the car.
  • The characters on the windscreen plate look scratched, re-riveted or misaligned.
  • The seller will not send a photo of the registration certificate before the viewing.

Message to send the seller

“Please send a clear photo of the chassis number on the car and of the Cypriot registration certificate (you can cover personal details), the current mileage, and, for a recent import, the V5C or export certificate. I want to check the car before I arrange a viewing.”

What we check before you buy in Cyprus

One VIN, the records from the countries the car has lived in. These are the checks that matter most for a car that came to Cyprus from the UK, Japan or mainland Europe.

Damage

Damage

The report includes accident and damage records where available for the VIN, such as salvage and write-off titles and auction damage classifications. A car repaired abroad and shipped to Cyprus can look clean on the forecourt; the record from its first life is where the repair shows. No record found is not proof the car was never damaged.

Mileage rollbacks

Mileage rollbacks

We put the dated mileage records we hold for the VIN in order, where available, so you can compare them with the dashboard. The weak point on an import is the gap between the last reading abroad and the first reading in Cyprus.

Specs & equipment

Specs & equipment

We decode the factory specification from the VIN: model, engine, fuel, gearbox, body and plant. Check it against the advert and the Cypriot registration certificate before you agree a price.

Safety recalls

Safety recalls

We list safety recall campaigns recorded for the make, model and year. A used car imported into Cyprus can reach its new owner without any recall letter, so ask a dealer of the brand to confirm the work was done.

Flood and weather damage

Flood and weather damage

Check whether the car carries flood or weather damage records where available. Flood cars are written off in one country and resold in another, which is exactly the route an import takes.

Stolen car check

Stolen car check

We check the VIN against European police and theft lists. A car stolen in another country and re-registered in Cyprus can be taken back from the buyer.

Photos

Photos

Where available, we include earlier photos of the car, for example from auctions. They can show damage, repairs or a different colour that the seller has not mentioned.

Market value

Market value

We estimate a fair market value from comparable cars, so you can tell whether the asking price in euros is reasonable for the year, mileage and specification.

Why check a VIN before buying a used car in Cyprus?

Two in three cars registered in Cyprus this year were first registered somewhere else. A 2018 European Parliament resolution puts tampered mileage at an estimated 30-50% of cross-border used-car sales. The VIN is the one identifier that follows the car across borders, so it is where a check starts.

Mileage on imports

The odometer can be wound back in the gap between the last reading abroad and registration in Cyprus. Dated mileage records, where available, show whether the dashboard fits the car's past.

Hidden accident damage

A repaired write-off can be shipped to Cyprus and sold as accident-free. Accident and damage records, where available, show what happened before it arrived.

Stolen vehicles

Cars stolen elsewhere in Europe are moved across borders and re-registered. A theft check against European police lists protects you from losing the car and the money.

Import paperwork

Since Brexit, a used car from the UK must be no more than five years old on arrival to be registered in Cyprus. The decoded year and specification help you test what the import papers say.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chassis number?
The chassis number is the car's unique identification code. On cars built for the UK, Europe and the US it is the 17-character VIN. People in Cyprus usually say chassis number; it is the same thing.
Where is the chassis number on a car in Cyprus?
On the registration certificate (field E), at the bottom of the windscreen, on the door pillar and often in the engine bay.
Can I check a chassis number online for free?
Yes. Enter it above for a free decode of the make, model and year. The full history report costs EUR 8.90.
What does a chassis number check show?
The factory specification, and in the full report dated mileage records, accident and damage records where available, a theft check, recall campaigns and market value.
My chassis number is shorter than 17 characters. Why?
That is usually a Japanese home-market frame number. Our reports need the full 17-character VIN, so for these cars ask the importer for the export certificate and auction sheet.
Can I find the chassis number from the number plate?
Not online. Ask the seller for a photo of the registration certificate, which shows both. Find the VIN there, then check it here.
Is a chassis number check the same as a VIN check?
Yes, for any car with a 17-character VIN.
How do I know the chassis number has not been tampered with?
Compare every location on the car with the papers. Grinding marks, uneven stamping or a replaced windscreen plate are reasons to walk away or ask the police to check.
Does the report include accident data?
Yes. Reports include accident and damage records where available for the VIN. No record found is not proof a car is undamaged.
How much does it cost?
The decode is free. The full report is EUR 8.90 + VAT, one payment.
