How can I check a used car's accident and damage history by VIN in Europe?
Short answer
No single database holds every accident in Europe. Records come from insurers, repair shops, auctions and the registers of countries a car has been in, and many exist only in some countries. A VIN history report collects accident and damage records where available. A clean result does not prove the car was never in a crash, because repairs paid privately rarely leave a record, so pair it with a paint-thickness and panel-gap inspection.
Decode any VIN free, then see the full report:
Where accident and damage information comes from
| Source type | Example | What it can show | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insurance-linked records | HistoVec (France) | Insurance claims involving expert-controlled repairs, as part of the owner-shared report. | Covers vehicles in the French register; generated by the owner. |
| Register and inspection flags | Car-Pass (Belgium) | Notes whether the vehicle still has to undergo a post-accident inspection before returning to the road. | Mainly the mileage record; not a damage list. |
| Registers that note events abroad | Historia Pojazdu (Poland) | Some risks recorded abroad, for example whether the vehicle was in an accident, for cars previously registered in another country. | Free tool; scope set by the register. |
| Repair records | RAR Auto-Pass (Romania) | Repairs after serious accidents affecting steering, braking, structure or passive safety, as recorded by the register. | Romanian records only. |
| Repair shops, auctions, salvage | Workshop, auction and salvage data | Damage entries where those sources report them. | Exists only in some countries and for some events. |

What a VIN history report shows
A Carlytics report brings together accident and damage records where available, together with dated mileage records and earlier registrations. The sample report shows what a finished report looks like before you buy.
How to read "no records"
No entry means no record was found in the sources available for that car. It does not prove that the car was never repaired: a repair paid privately, or damage in a country with little reporting, may leave nothing behind. Treat a clean result as one good sign and keep going with the physical checks.
Physical checklist for a possible accident car
ADAC points to two classic indicators: uneven gaps around doors and bonnet, and waves, colour differences or matt patches in the paint, which a paint-thickness measurement can confirm. An ADAC used-car check or an independent expert can do this for you.
- Even panel gaps on doors, boot and bonnet
- Uniform paint colour and gloss from every angle
- Paint-thickness readings across panels
- Matching manufacture dates on the glass
- No tool marks or fresh paint on bolts at the wings
How to check accident history by VIN
- Match the VIN. Compare the VIN on the car, the papers and the advert.
- Run the VIN. Decode it free, then open the full report for accident and damage records where available. Accident history check
- Ask the seller in writing. Ask whether the car has ever been in an accident, and where it was registered before.
- Check the registers of earlier countries. Use the official tool of the country where the car was registered, see the table above.
- Get an independent inspection. Have a paint-thickness and panel-gap check done by an expert before you pay.
