Common Issues Across the Ford Range

Before buying a used Ford, know the failure patterns the range is known for. A VIN check tells you the exact engine and build year against the dashboard mileage — pairing that with the Ford common-issue profile predicts which repair window is about to open on the car you are looking at.

PowerShift dual-clutch transmission (DPS6) shuddering and jerking — widespread issue on Focus and Fiesta 2011-2018, subject to class-action lawsuits

EcoBoost 1.0L and 1.5L coolant loss into cylinders — can cause head gasket failure, check for white exhaust smoke and coolant level drops

Timing belt failures on older Duratorq TDCi diesel engines — must be replaced at manufacturer intervals or risk engine destruction

Door latch recall issues on Focus, Fiesta, and Fusion — doors may open unexpectedly, check if recall has been completed

Diesel injector seal failures on 1.6 TDCi engines — identifiable by fuel smell and black residue around injectors

Rear wheel bearing premature wear on Focus and Kuga — listen for humming/droning noise at motorway speeds

Red Flags Specific to Used Ford Cars

  • PowerShift (DPS6) Focus or Fiesta with no documented transmission service or clutch replacement past 60,000 km
  • 1.0 EcoBoost or 1.5 EcoBoost with no recent coolant-loss diagnostic — head-gasket and cylinder-coolant ingress are known failure modes
  • Duratorq TDCi 1.6 diesel with smoky exhaust on cold start — typical of injector seal failure
  • Pre-2015 Focus with door-latch recall not logged — doors may open unexpectedly
  • Kuga or Focus past 100,000 km with humming rear-end noise — wheel bearings are a known weak point

How the Ford VIN Is Structured

Every Ford VIN follows the ISO 3779 standard — 17 characters split into the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI, positions 1-3), Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS, positions 4-8), and Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS, positions 9-17). Ford uses WF0/WF1 for European-built vehicles and 1FA/1FM for US-built cars. Position 4 indicates the restraint system, position 5 the model line, and positions 6-7 the body type and engine. European and American Ford VINs follow slightly different encoding patterns.

Pos.MeaningFord example
1-3WMI — manufacturer + countryWF0 = Ford Europe (Germany/Spain/Romania); 1FA = Ford USA
4Restraint / brake systemA = manual belts; B = automatic belts + airbags; G = side airbags
5-7Model line + bodyP3 = Focus; P5 = Kuga; HU = Puma; FW = Mondeo; CT = Tourneo
8Engine familyEcoBoost 1.0 / 1.5 / 2.3, Duratorq TDCi 1.5 / 2.0
9Check digitMathematical validation
10Model yearL = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025
11Plant codeG = Cologne (DE), C = Valencia (ES), W = Craiova (RO), 5 = Dearborn (US)
12-17Production serial numberUnique build sequence

VIN position 10 encodes the model year (e.g. L = 2020, M = 2021, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026). The full year code table is at the bottom of every paid report.

How to Find Your Ford Production Date

The production date matters for warranty, recall eligibility, and confirming a car was actually built when the seller claims. Registration date and build date can differ by months on Ford stock that sat on dealer lots before first registration.

Ford prints the production date on the manufacturer plate inside the engine bay, on the driver-side door-jamb sticker (build month and year), and in the factory build record kept on file by the manufacturer. On modern cars the plate is usually a metal rivet plate; on older cars it may be a foil sticker.

VIN position 10 carries the model year as a single letter (P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026). Model year and production date can differ — cars built in the late summer of one calendar year are often registered as the following model year.

The Carlytics decoder returns the production year from the VIN itself; the EUR 8.90 paid report adds the exact build month and plant where the Ford factory record is accessible.

Ford WERS codes (Worldwide Engineering Release System)

Ford uses an in-house specification system known as WERS (Worldwide Engineering Release System) to track factory options. Every Ford built in Europe carries a build-data label inside the driver-side door jamb listing the model code, body-build code, transmission code, axle ratio, paint code, and trim code in a compact alphanumeric format.

Example codes — Examples on the door label: an "MB" body code = 5-door hatchback; a "5C" transmission code = 6-speed manual; trim codes such as "9AB" identify the seat fabric, headlining colour, and dashboard trim level together.

The WERS label is what dealers and bodyshops use to order paint and trim parts. A seller who cannot show or photograph the door-jamb label is hiding either the paint code (suggests respray) or a non-matching trim record (suggests interior swap). Carlytics decodes the WERS body and trim positions from the VIN itself.

Cross-Border Risk Profile for Ford

Ford's European used-car export pattern is dominated by ex-fleet Mondeos, Focuses and Kugas flowing from the UK and Germany into Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania. The Romanian-built Puma and EcoSport (Craiova plant) frequently re-enter Western Europe carrying patchy service records. UK-spec Focus and Fiesta (Ford of Britain) flood into Cyprus, Malta and Ireland post-Brexit. Ford's PowerShift dual-clutch transmission (DPS6) on 2011-2018 Focus and Fiesta is a major buyer trap: thousands of these cars circulate the EU used market with hidden mechatronic-unit failures, and the cross-border check is the only way to flag whether a workshop has logged a transmission repair.

Origin

United StatesCologne, Germany, Valencia, Spain. Largest off-lease and ex-fleet supply enters the used market here first.

Cross-border flow

Ford stock crosses EU borders into Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, the Baltics and the Balkans. Mileage records rarely transfer with the registration document.

Buyer leverage

A Ford VIN report reconciles the origin-country service touch points with the destination registration. The gap that exporters exploit becomes visible to the buyer.

Ford Plants & WMI Codes

Ford operates 7 assembly plants across 6 countries. The first three VIN characters identify the corporate-registered origin; the 11th character identifies the specific plant. Knowing the production plant matters because market-specific equipment, climate prep, and regulatory homologation differ by build location.

Where to find the VIN on your Ford: On Ford vehicles, the VIN is located on the dashboard near the base of the windshield (driver's side), on a sticker inside the driver's door frame, and on a plate in the engine compartment. European Ford models also display the VIN on the type plate near the door latch.

Ford VIN Decoder FAQ

Common questions about decoding Ford vehicle identification numbers, plus model-specific buyer guidance.

What does a WF0, WF1, or 1FA VIN prefix mean on a Ford?
WF0 is the standard Ford-of-Europe passenger-car WMI, used for cars built in Cologne (Germany), Valencia (Spain) and Craiova (Romania). WF1 covers some additional Ford Europe variants. 1FA, 1FB, 1FM, 1FT identify Ford USA-built vehicles. UK-built Transit Connect carries SFA. The 11th VIN character then identifies the specific plant — G = Cologne, C = Valencia, W = Craiova.
Was my Ford Focus or Fiesta affected by the PowerShift transmission lawsuit?
Ford Focus and Fiesta models with the DPS6 PowerShift dual-clutch transmission (build years 2011-2018) were subject to widespread mechatronic-unit failures, juddering and stalling. Ford issued multiple TSBs, extended warranty coverage, and faced class-action lawsuits in the US and UK. Cars that received goodwill repair have a documented mechatronic or clutch-pack replacement on the service record. The Carlytics paid report flags whether such a repair has been logged.
How do I tell a Ford ST or RS from an ST-Line bodykit car?
Positions 5-7 carry the model line and body code. A genuine Mk3 Focus ST reads 'P3F' in the model line plus an ST-specific body code; an ST-Line Focus reads 'P3' plus a different body code. Dealers regularly fit ST bumpers, badges and Recaro-style seats to lesser cars. The Carlytics paid report confirms the factory trim and engine code so you cannot be sold an 'RS' that left the factory as an ST.
Does the Ford VIN tell me whether the car has EcoBoost or Duratorq engines?
Yes — position 8 encodes the engine family. EcoBoost 1.0L, 1.5L and 2.3L carry distinct codes; Duratorq TDCi 1.5 and 2.0 diesel each have their own. The Carlytics free decode returns the engine displacement; the paid report returns the exact engine code (e.g. 'YYDB' for 1.0 EcoBoost 125 PS), which matters because the 1.0 EcoBoost head-gasket coolant-ingress issue is build-year specific.
What is the difference between Ford of Britain and Ford Europe VINs?
Both use the WF0 (or WF1) WMI prefix because Ford Europe is the corporate entity. The plant code in position 11 identifies whether the car was built in Cologne (DE), Valencia (ES), Craiova (RO), or formerly Genk (BE, closed 2014). UK-built Transit Connect carried SFA, but UK passenger-car production ended in 2002 (Dagenham). Post-Brexit UK-spec Fiestas and Focuses still carry WF0 but with right-hand-drive build codes.
Where exactly is the VIN on a Ford Focus or Fiesta?
Four locations: (1) windshield base, visible from outside on the driver's side; (2) door-jamb sticker visible when the driver's door is open; (3) stamped into the body in the engine bay near the strut tower; (4) on a plate inside the engine compartment. On Mk3 Focus the most reliable identifier is the door-jamb sticker — windshield stickers fade in southern European sun.
Why are UK-spec Ford Focuses so common in Ireland and Cyprus?
The UK is the largest right-hand-drive used-car market in Europe, and post-Brexit the depreciation gap between UK and Ireland created a structural arbitrage. Tens of thousands of UK-spec Focuses, Fiestas and Mondeos cross the Irish Sea annually. Cyprus and Malta absorb additional volume. UK service-record databases do not transfer to Ireland or Cyprus automatically, which is the gap the Carlytics paid report closes.
Was my Ford affected by the Takata airbag recall?
Ford issued multiple Takata airbag recalls between 2014 and 2020 covering Ranger, Mustang, Edge and certain Focus variants. The recalls are tied to specific VIN ranges. The Carlytics paid report flags whether an open Takata recall remains against this VIN — critical because unrepaired Takata inflators can rupture and project metal fragments into the cabin.
