How MINI encodes its VINs
Every MINI vehicle carries a unique 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that acts as the vehicle's fingerprint.
MINI uses WMW as its WMI code, indicating German ownership (BMW Group). Despite being built in the UK, the 'W' prefix reflects corporate registration. Position 4 indicates the model line (Hatch, Countryman, Clubman), position 5 the body, and position 6 the engine specification. The VIN is split into three main sections: the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI, positions 1–3), the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS, positions 4–9) and the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS, positions 10–17).
